Edmund Rack's Survey of Somerset
We have waited a long time to see this remarkable book, and we are delighted to have been able to obtain a copy for our Society's Library.
When he set out to make this incredibly detail account of the history of Somerset, Edmund Rack was assisting the Rev. John Collinson and providing information for Collinson's The History and Antiquities of the County of Somerset' which was published in 1791.
Rack's contribution was of the greatest importance. Working on a huge scale, he attempted to include all that he found out about, in the churches, houses, gardens and the people who were associated with those places in the County. This work took him from 1781 to his death, six years later, and in that time he had travelled hundreds of miles.
I am sure there will be a long queue of members wanting to read the contents. When you have a chance, do read the list of subscribers. You will find our Society's name there.
